Teaser
Extreme close-up of a pair of hands in surgical gloves
tightening the bezel on an X-acto knife, clamping in the blade.
Extreme close-up with a very tight depth of field, so that only
objects in the very center of the shot are in sharp focus, of an X-acto blade
being drawn along a metal straight-edge over something with writing on it.
Extreme close-up of the upper half of a male face. The eyes are
looking intently downward. There’s a strange sound, like one thing being
dragged across another, that ends in a snap. A pair of tweezers appears
before the face, holding a small, white rectangle. The eyes focus on the
rectangle and, even though the mouth is out of frame, we can tell by the eyes
that the face has broken into a smile. After a moment, the eyes look straight
ahead past the rectangle, the smile vanishes suddenly and guiltily, and the
rectangle is lowered.
Extreme close-up with a very tight depth of field of the edge of
a rubber roller as it rolls along the face of a small plastic card.
Medium shot of a boy in his late teens. This is BA. He’s
holding a plastic card, like a driver’s license, in his gloved hand, waving
the card back and forth in front of his face. He blows on the card periodically.
We see only the blank back of the card.
Cut to a shot over the boy’s shoulder as he hands the card to
a girl across the table from him. On the table are an X-acto knife, a metal
straight-edge, and a smooth brown glass bottle. The room that these two are in
is squalid. The walls are covered with graffiti.
BA: Congratulations, Firefly. You are
now a student at William Allen.
The girl takes the card.
FIREFLY: Thanks, BA! (looks at
the card excitedly) This is great! Now I can—
BA: (beat) What?
What’s wrong?
FIREFLY: Her first name means "from
a monkey"!
BA: (leaning over the table to
see the card) Hmm. So it does. Well, you know how it
is, Firefly: You don’t get to pick your own name.
FIREFLY starts to object, then thinks better of it. With a sigh,
she stands and leaves the room.
BA removes his gloves and picks up the small, white rectangle
with his fingers. We still see only the blank back of the rectangle. BA is
looking at the front of the rectangle, smiling again.
BA: But she sure is pretty.
BA turns the rectangle over in his hand and licks the back. He
stands up, turns toward the graffiti-covered wall, and slaps his hand against
it. When he removes his hand, there’s a small, rectangular something
stuck to the wall. It’s difficult to pick out the rectangle among all the
graffiti.
BA kisses the index finger on his left hand and touches that
finger to the rectangle. When he does this, we see he has a blue bandana wrapped
around his left forearm -- a symbol of the Lobos gang. BA crosses the room.
BA: "From a monkey"...
Medium close-up on the graffiti-covered wall. In the center of
the shot is the small rectangle, slightly cock-eyed. It’s an ID photo of Desi
Stark. As BA exits and closes the door of the room, the light on this wall
contracts to a narrow vertical bar centered on Desi’s photo. The light holds
for a second, then contracts to darkness.
Cut to black. Roll theme song and title sequence.
The Rest of the Episode (in outline form)
Act 1: Connections
- Inside William Allen High School.
- JD talks with her guidance counselor, Mr. Weston, about the graduation
requirement for community service.
- She says she was offended by the dirty condition of the street in
which Miranda was shot (in Episode 1.01) and she would like to clean
them up as her community service project.

- She also believes there should be "more green in the
city," so she asks to join the 4-H Club. Mr. Weston directs JD to
Mrs. Gallagher, faculty advisor for the 4-H Club. Cut to Mrs.
Gallagher.
- JD asks Mrs. Gallagher if being in 4-H will allow her to work with
animals.
- Mrs. Gallagher explains that the 4-H Club has a vital role in caring
for the livestock at the Great
Allentown Fair.
- Most 4-H meetings occur after school. Mrs. Gallagher will let JD
know when and where the next meeting will take place.
- After school, Desi goes to Tiger Schulmann Karate (TSK) to practice with Michael
Chen.
- On the way to the TSK, Desi remembered she was supposed to do something
the night before at the Phoebe Home. Of course, she forgot about the
commitment because she's Plannerless.
- When Desi got to TSK, she called Phoebe Home and spoke with Rick, the
lead volunteer.
- Rick says that Desi was scheduled to come by and read to Mrs.
McCulloch last night. But last night was a madhouse: Desi didn't come,
Sally called in sick, everyone was running all evening. No one got the
chance to read to Mrs. McCulloch.
- And then this morning, something happened. Mrs. McCulloch was taken
to the Lehigh Valley Hospital at 17th and Chew Streets. They're not
sure what the problem is, maybe a reaction to her medication?
- Desi says she'll visit Mrs. McCulloch. Rick warns Desi that the last
information he received was that Mrs. McCulloch was nonresponsive.
- Desi tells Michael she needs to visit someone in the hospital.
- Michael offers to hang around for about an hour, since the session
is already paid for.
- Desi asks that while she's gone, Michael take her list of addresses
she got for "Philip Glass" or "P Glass" in
Florida. He's to see if any of those addresses match the address of
the credit card to which the lessons are billed.
- Backtracking slightly, JD is walking home from school.
- She walks past the Lehigh Valley Hospital at 17th and Chew, a block from
her high school.
- Cut to the interior of the lobby of the hospital:
- A young security guard is standing near the information desk,
looking over papers on a clipboard. This is Kevin from Episode
1.01.
- He glances through the large lobby window and sees JD approaching
the main door.
- Immediately Kevin snaps to attention. Then, realizing he's still
holding the clipboard, puts it down on the information desk. He
quickly straightens his uniform and crosses his arms over his chest.
No, that's too aloof -- he puts his hands behind his back. He smooths
his hair. All the while, he's facing straight ahead, waiting (while
not appearing to do so) for JD to enter.
- When Kevin finally glances out the window again, he sees her walk
right past the main door. She apparently never intended to enter.
- Kevin freezes in terror for a moment, then dashes down the main
corridor of the hospital, which parallels the sidewalk that JD is on.
JD doesn't see any of this and is completely unaware of it.
- Kevin trots down the hallway in the vertical-back posture of people
who know they're not supposed to be running. He weaves his way between
visitors and finally reaches an exit door.
- Kevin stops at the exit door for a moment to compose himself. He
re-straightens his uniform as he rehearses "Hey, fancy running
into you here."
- Cut back to the sidewalk. JD has passed the hospital's main entrance
when it occurs to her that Manuel, the Carmín who was shot in the
drive-by in Episode 1.01, is
probably in this hospital because it was the closest one to the shooting.
She doubles back to the main entrance of the hospital.
- Cut back to Kevin.
- Kevin composes himself, pushes the crash bar of the door and steps
outside. As the door shuts, Kevin adopts a nonchalant
I'm-just-standing-here-on-break pose. He's looking straight ahead,
waiting for JD to cross his path.
- When a few seconds go by and he doesn't see JD, Kevin looks down the
sidewalk, just in time to see JD enter the hospital through the main
entrance.
- Panic-stricken, he tries to open the door he's just come through,
only to discover it's locked from this side. He spends a second or two
pulling on it before he gives up. Kevin dashes toward the main
entrance that JD has just passed through.
- He's three steps into the dash when the door Kevin has just left
opens. A pair of visitors exits the hospital through the one-way door.
Kevin screeches to a halt, unsure which is the faster route. He
waffles for a second, then turns back to the exit door. He grabs it
just before it shuts and dashes inside.
- JD approaches the information desk. The soundtrack for this shot does
not include the actors' dialog
- JD asks for and receives directions to a patient's room.
- JD enters the elevator as a group of visitors approach the
information desk. The elevator doors close while the visitors speak to
the person at the information desk.
- A few seconds later, Kevin races into the scene. He looks around,
but he doesn't see JD. He approaches the information desk to find out
where JD has gone. When he sees the visitors who are currently being
helped, Kevin, with obvious restraint, decorously falls in line behind
them to wait his turn to ask a question. Cut back to JD.
- JD is looking for Manuel's room when she sees a policeman sitting on a
chair outside Room 205. That's Manuel's room.
- Since she's not sure why the policeman is there, she walks past the
room and surreptitiously peeks in. Manuel sees her and beckons her in.
The cop asks JD if she's carrying anything, checks her cans of spray
paint, then lets her pass
- The conversation is largely social. The topic on everyone's mind is
why is the cop there? Manuel doesn't know.
- Manuel asks JD to tell Ice to come visit him.
- During this interchange, JD sees the cop leap to his feet as he gets
out of the way of a crash cart that's piloted down the corridor by
three nurses.
- Cut to Desi, who has entered Mrs. McCulloch's room on the fourth floor
with a bouquet of flowers
- A man in his fifties identifies himself as Mrs. McCulloch's son
Walter. He thanks Desi for the flowers and asks if she'd mind staying
with his mother while he gets dinner at the hospital cafeteria. Desi
agrees and Walter leaves.
- Desi has never seen a human being connected to more medical
equipment than Mrs.
McCulloch. She's intubated and on a respirator,
heart monitor, and several IV drips. She's completely nonresponsive.
- Desi apologizes profusely to Mrs. McCulloch for having missed their
reading appointment the night before at Phoebe Home. She barely
finishes when she notices a book on the nightstand. It's the book she
was supposed to read to Mrs. McCulloch. Desi falls silent as she picks
up the book. A moment later, she takes a seat next to Mrs. McCulloch's
bed and begins to read aloud.
- Cut back to JD, who finishes her conversation with Manuel and leaves his
room.
- She's curious about the crash cart, so she wanders down the hall in
the direction it was going.
- Two doors down, the door to a patient's room is closed, but JD can
hear the activity within. An authoritative voice is barking out
medical-sounding commands like "Ringer's lactate" and
"stat!. The commands are unemotional until the voice shouts,
"Where the hell is that atropine?!"
- Cut to the interior of the patient's room. A man is lying motionless
on the bed while six people work hectically around him. One is
administering CPR. Two are a man and a woman who are frantically
searching the crash cart. The man says, "I know it's here. I
packed the cart myself! I can't find it..."
- After a moment, the man in charge shouts, "There's no time for
this! Get it from the supply closet!"
- The man who claimed to pack the cart bolts out of the room, almost
directly into JD, and races down the corridor. The cop on the chair
stands and steps back into Manuel's room to get out of the nurse's
way.
- Coming up the corridor toward JD is an old man in a hospital gown.
As he and the running nurse cross paths, the old man sticks his leg
out and trips the nurse. The nurse goes sailing and skids along the
polished floor.
- The old man doesn't react at all. JD is shocked, not only at what
happened, but at the way it happened -- there was something strange
about the way the nurse tripped. The nurse looks over his shoulder at
the old man, but says nothing as he scrambles to his feet. The nurse
runs to the locked supply cabinet door and begins fumbling with a set
of keys.
- The old man takes three more steps toward JD and fades away into
nothing. Cut to black for a commercial break.
Act 2: Immediately Afterward
- Back to JD in the hospital.
- The nurse unlocks the supply cabinet, grabs what he needs, and runs
back to the patient's room
- The cop steps out from Manuel's room. JD asks him if he saw the old
guy in the hospital gown. He says no. JD decides to head out.
- When the elevator doors open, Kevin is there. He starts to move past
JD, like a man on a mission, when he suddenly sees her. "Hi!"
He gets back into the elevator with her and rides down to the lobby.
- In the lobby, JD and Kevin talk for a bit.
- JD asks Kevin if he knows why there's a cop in the hall on the second
floor. He says when he came on shift, he was told there'd be a policeman
stationed there, but he wasn't told why. She then asks him if there have
been any reports of missing patients. He says no.
- Kevin points out that Mrs. Applegate, the old woman who was stabbed
outside the church (in Episode 1.01), is also a
patient in this hospital. He says she'd be in much worse shape --
possibly dead -- if JD hadn't hadn't kept her cool and given him
information to relay to the ambulance crew by radio. Kevin admires
people who are dependable in a crisis.
- Kevin then tells JD a little bit about himself:
- He's a rover: Wherever his company has an account and normal
personnel are unavailable, Kevin will fill in.
- Because he's a rover, he works whenever and wherever he's needed.
Usually, that ends up being night shift.
- Kevin is one of the most senior security officers in his company.
When JD questions this because of Kevin's youth (he looks to be
maybe 20), he says, "There's a lot of turnover. Most people
don't stick with a job like this for very long."
- While Kevin is talking, JD notices over his shoulder that there's a
man leaning against the information desk, watching them. Watching her.
As if he wants to talk to her. She's never seen this man before.
- The man approaches and waits for a lull in the conversation. He
then says to Kevin's back, "Is everything alright here, Officer
Troxell?"
- Kevin turns. At the sight of the man, he begins to stammer. He
introduces JD to James
Schuler, the owner of the contract security
company that Kevin works for.

- Mr. Schuler shakes JD's hand while he gives her clothing the
once-over.
- Desi enters the lobby, having concluded her reading session with
Mrs. McCulloch. She is introduced to Kevin and Mr. Schuler. Kevin
indicates that he thinks he recognizes Desi from the scene outside
the church (in Episode 1.01).
- And that thought prompts Kevin to tell Mr. Schuler, "This
[JD] is the girl I told you about -- the one who saved that lady's
life outside the church." Mr. Schuler's expression warms
visibly at this news.

- Mr. Schuler says that one of his officers is testifying in court
this afternoon and he likes to be there for support. He thought
while he was in the neighborhood, he'd visit some of his accounts.
That done, he wishes them a good day and excuses himself.
- While Desi, JD, and Kevin are talking, the elevator doors open. Out come
six medical staff. One of them is the nurse that JD saw trip in the
hallway; another is the lead doctor that our audience saw yelling for the
atropine. JD recognizes by their somber demeanor that they were not
successful at reviving the patient.
- After some additional small talk, Desi and JD say their goodbyes to
Kevin and leave the hospital.
- Afterward
- On the way back to Michael Chen at TSK, JD tells Desi that something weird is going on.
She describes the apparition she saw.

- At the TSK, Michael reports that one of the "P. Glasses" on
Desi's list is in the same city as the billing address of the credit
card to which Michael's lessons are charged. However, the street
addresses are different.
- Desi calls the number that Michael identified and gets an answering
machine. She recognizes the voice of her Philip Glass on the
outgoing message! She leaves a message with her phone number, asking Mr.
Glass to call. She's about to say more when there's a beep and an
electronic voice announces "Mailbox full."
- After training, JD talks Desi into going to church.
Cut Scene: Late afternoon, downtown
- A car is stopped at a traffic light. The car's dominant color is that shade
known as "primer." The muffler is loud. There's one person in
the car -- the driver, a Latino youth. He has all the windows rolled down
and the deep bass of his music pours from the car.
- Suddenly, a young man appears outside the driver-side window. This is a
recurring character played by a Young Lou Diamond Phillips. He places his
crossed arms on the frame of the window and greets the driver with an
unnerving degree of enthusiasm.
Young Lou D Phillips: Lupito! Long time no see! You haven't been
trying to avoid me, have you?
Lupito: (clearly startled, then afraid) Ernesto! No, man! Why
would I do that?
Ernesto:
I don't know, man. But it seemed that way. (beat)
Hey, that work you did outside the school last Friday -- (pantomiming
a gun) bang, bang -- that was some good stuff!
Lupito: I was... just trying to make you happy.
Ernesto: (caressing the side of Lupito's face) And you came
so very close....
- Cut to black for a commercial break.
Act 3: Lord Help Us!
- Desi and JD visit a nearby Catholic church. Neither Desi nor JD are
Catholic.

- In the vestibule, Desi lights a votive candle for Mrs. McCulloch. JD
writes on a slip of paper, "The church could do a better job of
offering refuge to the community if it was left unlocked at night."
She drops this paper into what she takes to be the "suggestion box."
- Desi and JD attend Mass. Everyone but them seems to know what to say,
what to sing, when to stand, and when to kneel. They fumble their way
through as best they can.

- After the Mass, JD and Desi take confession
- Starting with JD's confession:

- She says she's seen a man possessed by a demon. She slips her
painting of the demon to the priest.
- The priest emphasizes that while the Catholic Church accepts the
reality of demonic possession, it is an extremely rare event and never
a foregone conclusion. He has never personally witnessed a possession.
There may be many other explanations for what JD has seen.
- Ultimately, after JD's relentless hounding, the priest recommends
that JD speak with Father
Sullivan, the oldest priest at the
church. He may have more experience with such things.
- Then Desi takes confession:
- She asks if it's possible to buy a papal indulgence for someone
other than oneself. And if so, will the church take a credit card?
- JD sees Father Sullivan.
- Father Sullivan points out that genuine demonic
possession is so rare that the church has specially trained people
to detect it and deal with it. It's most likely that what she saw
had some other cause.
- JD begs Father Sullivan to look into the matter. He agrees if she
leaves him her painting of Squid Face.
- He tells her to check back with him in a few days, but she
shouldn't get her hopes up that this is genuine possession.
- JD asks if the church sells holy water. "Pint or quart?"
replies Father Sullivan.
- JD leaves Father Sullivan and rejoins Desi. Desi asks JD how her
confession and meeting with this priest went.
- Cut to a
close-up of the candle that Desi lit for Mrs. McCulloch. It sputters once, twice, and then
flickers out.
- Cut Scene
- Interior of Mrs. McCulloch's hospital room. Her condition has not
changed. Her son Walter is asleep in the chair by her bed.
- Through the open door, a little girl enters. She's wearing a
flowered dress. But her most noticeable feature is the deep gash on
the right side of her head. The right half of her face is bloody --
or rather, stained with fresh-looking, but not dripping, blood. The
girl's facial expression is blank.
- She approaches the end of Mrs. McCulloch's bed. She stops and
leans over to look at Mrs. McCulloch's chart, which is hanging on
the footboard of the bed.
- As the girl looks at the chart, we cut to a close-up of the chart.
The writing on it is changing. The new words look like medical
terms, but they're different from what was originally there. Walter
is still fast asleep.
- The girl then straightens up and fades away. Cut to black for a
commercial break.
Act 4: A Little Later
- Desi quietly enters her house.
- As she approaches the stairs, a male voice calls out, "Sweetie,
is that you?" Desi’s dad, played by Fred McMurray, appears in the
doorway of his study.
- After a brief interchange, Mr. Stark knows something is wrong. He
invites his daughter into his study to sit on "her chair." On
the desk behind Mr. Stark, we see that he's been working on building a
ship in a bottle. An unlit smoking pipe lies next to the model ship.
- Desi explains that she feels bad about Mrs. McCulloch's condition. Mr.
Stark infers the true nature of the problem and explains that Desi
mustn't think that she's somehow responsible for Mrs. McCulloch's
condition because she forgot all about her appointment to read to the
elderly woman.
- Mr. Stark asks which hospital Mrs. McCulloch is in. When Desi tells
him, his face drops slightly and he says, "Oh. (beat) I've never been
impressed with the quality of the care at that facility. (beat) But
I'm sure your friend will be alright!"
- JD goes to the Carmines' house to see Ghost
- She asks Ghost why a cop would be stationed outside Manuel's hospital
room. Ghost says he doesn't know, but he’ll check into it: "Cops
talk to prison guards, and prison guards talk around inmates. Maybe I
can find out from some boys inside."
- JD brings up Ghost's earlier question about whether she's on good
terms with any farmers. She asks if it has to be a farmer, or if a
farmer's kid would do. Ghost pauses a moment and says, "What counts
is that he trusts you."
- Ghost mentions that Nina and
Ice are both out of the hospital, so JD
heads upstairs to visit them.
- Ice is still very banged up and can barely hobble around, but Nina is
taking care of him. "They get you out of them beds as fast as they
can."

- After some catching up, JD arranges to pick up Nina tomorrow to visit
Manuel.
- The next morning, at the hospital
- Desi enters the hospital and sees Kevin. He asks if JD will be coming
by. Desi says maybe later.
- Desi goes up to Mrs. McCulloch's room to visit. Mrs. McCulloch's son
Walter is not there.
- Upon seeing Mrs. McCulloch, Desi is struck by a bizarre series of
macabre thoughts:
- She notices that Mrs. McCulloch looks so old and so very frail.
- The array of medical equipment to which Mrs. McCulloch is attached
is the only thing that's keeping her alive. She'll live only as long
as the machines want her to.
- Suppose she's already dead? Suppose the machines killed her and
they're hiding the fact by displaying a fake heartbeat on the heart
monitor? She could have died two days ago and no one would know it!
- These thoughts are interrupted by the arrival of a nurse who's
carrying medication on a tray. She takes the tray to the foot of the bed
and reads the chart that hangs there. Her brow furrows.
The nurse leaves again.
- Desi sits down and reads to Mrs. McCulloch. At one point, while she's
taking a break from her reading, she thinks she sees a naked woman pass by
the door.
- Desi gets up and follows. Sure enough, there's a naked woman walking
down the corridor, away from Desi.
- A pair of male orderlies walks right past the naked woman without
so much as a glance.
- Desi motions toward the woman and asks them if that’s
allowed.
- They glance back, then tell Desi, "As long as they can
get around, sure."

- The naked woman enters a patient's room. Desi follows.
- Inside the room is another nurse with a tray of medications. There are
two beds in the room, and each bed holds a patient. She puts one set of
medication down on the nightstand by the first patient, saying,
"This is for you..." She turns and places the second set of
medication on the nightstand of the second patient, who is asleep.
"...and this is for you." The nurse does not acknowledge the
naked woman in any way.
- The nurse takes a syringe and announces to the second patient,
"Time for your shot." She starts to reach for the second
patient's medication.
- The naked woman waves her hand. Fluidly the nurse turns and grabs
an ampoule intended for the first patient rather than the one for
the second patient.
- The nurse turns back to the second patient and begins to fill the
syringe when Desi shouts, "That's the wrong one!"
- Both the nurse and the naked woman look at Desi.
- The nurse looks down at the ampoule and says, "Oh, my!"
- The naked woman begins to approach Desi.
- Desi blocks the doorway in a defensive stance and shouts
"What's the meaning of this, Lady Godiva?"
- The naked woman continues to approach to Desi. She reaches Desi and
then walks right through her. Desi feels a chill, but Lady Godiva is
nowhere to be seen.
- Desi rushes back to Mrs. McCulloch's room. As she enters, the nurse
has just finished hanging a new IV bag for Mrs. McCulloch and starts the
IV drip. The nurse says, "That's better" as Desi picks up the
phone.
- Desi dials JD's pager, then waits for JD to call back.
- JD calls back just a few moments later, as the nurse is
leaving.
- Desi explains that there's something weird going
on at the hospital. JD is relieved to hear that Desi is finally
aware of this as well.
- JD agrees to come right over to Mrs. McCulloch's room.
- As Desi hangs up, she notices that the heart monitor's beeping has
increased in pace. Within seconds, it becomes erratic, and then Mrs.
McCulloch flat-lines.
- Desi runs into the hall for help. Hospital staff appear out of
nowhere (figuratively) and excitedly enter Mrs. McCulloch's room.
They ask Desi to wait in the hall.
- As the last of the staff dashes into Mrs. McCulloch's room, Desi
sees a little girl standing in the corridor. The little girl is
facing Desi. The right side of the girl's face is covered with
blood. The girl looks at Desi and frowns a very sad frown.
Then she turns and walks away down the corridor.
- Desi follows. The girl fades away into thin air just as Desi
reaches the stairwell door. Desi feels a waft of cold air where the
girl stood a second ago.
- Desi opens the door to the stairs. Again she feels the cold air.
The cold spot seems to be moving down the stairs. Desi follows the
cold spot down, ever downward.
- In the basement
- Desi steps through the basement door to a large industrial-looking
corridor -- there's dim lighting, overhead pipes, big laundry carts,
doors to storage rooms, etc.
- Through an open doorway, Desi sees an old maintenance guy. He’s
complaining to someone off-camera about problems with the thermostat in
Room 517. The maintenance guy asks, "Do you want to take care of
it, or should I?" There's no answer. The maintenance man follows
this silence with, "OK, I’ll go."
- Cut to an over-the-shoulder shot (over Desi's shoulder) of the
maintenance guy getting his tools together. Desi steps out of frame as
the maintenance guy turns toward the camera. The maintenance guy walks
toward the camera as he approaches the door to the stairs. On his way to
the stairs, he walks directly past where we thought Desi was, but no
Desi is in sight. As the stairwell door closes behind the maintenance
guy, Desi stands up behind a laundry cart.
- Desi checks out the room the maintenance guy just left. It’s a
typical break room. There's a table with ancient-looking office chairs
around it, two desks, tool calendars on the walls, a radio quietly
playing classical music. No one else is here.
- As Desi checks out the room, she sees a cork board full of newspaper
clippings. All of the articles are tales of tragedy that happened here
at the hospital. A photo accompanying one of the stories catches Desi's
eye. It's the face of the woman she addressed as Lady Godiva. The title
of the article is "Family charges hospital with wrongful
death." As Desi reads the story, a large shadow rises behind her.
- Desi senses the presence behind her and whirls around, hoping it will
be nothing more than a janitor and prepared to pull her punch if that's
the case. Unfortunately, it is more than a janitor. It's very
large, and its ears are long and pointed. It looks almost like a cross
between a wolf and some kind of amphibian. Desi follows through with the
strike. Her fist slams into the wolf/amphibian's chest.
- The wolf/amphibian slashes back with cruel-looking claws. Desi ducks
in time to avoid the blow. The radio behind her is not so lucky; it goes
flying across the room.
- Cut to JD as she enters the lobby of the hospital.
- Kevin is behind the information desk. JD asks which room Mrs.
McCulloch is in. Kevin explains that the information person has just
stepped out. When JD seems anxious, Kevin says he’s seen how it’s
done, he’ll try to bring up the room number. "How do you spell
McCulloch?"
- JD comes behind the desk to help and sees the bank of security
monitors. The images on most of them are stationary, or at best very
slow-moving. One of them,
however, is a-flurry with activity. It's the fight between Desi and the wolf/amphibian. JD points
to that monitor and asks where that is. Kevin says, "That's the
basement. Why is your friend fighting with a janitor?"
- Kevin dashes down the stairs with JD not far behind.
- Cut back to Desi. She and wolf/amphibian are now in the hall outside
the maintenance break room.
- Desi leaps up to grab the overhead pipes and delivers a gymnastic
kick to the wolf/amphibian's head. The wolf/amphibian slashes at
Desi to disembowel her as she's hanging from the pipes. She swings
over the pipe, comes down, and delivers another kick to the
wolf/amphibian, which flies back into the opposite wall. Only the
Russian judge gives Desi less than a 9.5!
- Kevin enters the scene from the stairway. As the wolf/amphibian is
struggling to its feet, Kevin runs to Desi and grapples her! He tells
her to calm down, everything will be alright.
- JD exits the stairwell. As the wolf/amphibian stands and begins to
move toward the greatly impeded Desi, JD picks up a mop saturated with
bleach water and drives the business end (that would be the wet part)
into the wolf/amphibian's face. This does no serious damage, but
partially blinds the creature.
- Desi tries to break free from Kevin, but no luck. He's been trained
for this sort of thing. The wolf/amphibian, angered by this latest
attack and seeing that Desi isn't a threat at this instant, slashes at
JD.
Desi, dragging Kevin along, tries unsuccessfully to block the creature's
blow. JD has picked up the mop bucket of water to hurl at the monster,
but as she hoists the bucket, it slashes her midriff. Desi and Kevin are
spattered with JD's’blood as JD crumples to the floor!
- Cut to a close-up of JD. She knows she's dying. How does she know
this? Because she sees dead people. There's a little girl with a bloody
head, a naked woman, and an old man in a hospital gown. Idly, JD thinks,
"Aren't these supposed to be people I know?" That's when she
recognizes the old man in the hospital gown -- he's the one who tripped
the nurse in Act 1. More people are materializing behind these three.
All of the dearly departed look excited, expectant, as if they’re
there to offer encouragement. They say nothing, however, which makes
them a very subdued cheering
section.
- Kevin sees JD fall and shouts "Nooo!!" He releases his hold on Desi. Desi is
filled with rage.
She does a jump kick to the wolf/amphibian's head. Kevin runs to JD and
holds her, then begins applying pressure to her wounds. Desi picks up a
mop and, using it as a bo stick, slams the wolf/amphibian in the gut.
This propels the monster into a laundry cart, which careers across the
floor and slams into the incinerator in the far wall. As luck would have
it, the incinerator door is wide open. When the cart hits the
incinerator, it up-ends, propelling its contents into the furnace.
- There's a howl of agony from the incinerator, then silence. The
spectator ghosts
let loose a silent cheer. A bright shaft of light descends through the
ceiling. One by one, the smiling ghosts, of whom there are now dozens,
turn to sparkly dust and get sucked up the shaft of light. Within
seconds, none remain. The shaft of light goes out.
- Kevin looks up from JD. His focus on JD has caused him to miss all the
action. He yells to Desi to get a doctor!
- Cut to JD being wheeled on a gurney through the hospital corridors as
Desi and Kevin follow. JD is wheeled through the double doors to the
operating room, where Desi and Kevin are not permitted to follow.
As the double doors close, cut to next scene.
Cut Scene
- Father Sullivan is seated at a table, surrounded by old-looking books,
many of them open. JD’s painting of the demon is on the table nearby. As
Father Sullivan leafs through one of the books, the camera slowly circles
around him.
- Fr Sullivan says, "...Removes victim’s internal organs..."
(flip, flip) "...Possesses the bodies of the dead or
unconscious..." (flip, flip. Something draws his interest)
"'...This demon enslaves the souls of those who die through neglect or
carelessness. It uses these slaves to kill more people in a similar
manner, upon whose souls it then feeds….'"
- The camera has now come fully around, over Father Sullivan's
shoulder. The book in his hands is open to an ink drawing of the
wolf/amphibian that Desi has just fought.
- Father Sullivan says, "Where did they come up with this
stuff?" and resumes flipping pages.
Act 5: Wrapping Up
- The next day, in JD’s hospital room
- Desi drops in for a visit. She tries to explain to JD that
"weird" is one thing, "dangerous" is another. JD has
to be more careful to avoid combat in the future.
- Kevin comes by. He's carrying a large arrangement of flowers.
- Desi mouths to JD that Kevin likes her. Desi then excuses herself to
go do "that thing" so Kevin and JD can be alone. As Desi
heads for the door, she pantomimes to JD that she should talk to him.
- Kevin says, "You know, they still haven't found the janitor who
did this to you."
- When Desi exits, in the background we can see Mrs. McCulloch in the
other bed. She's still comatose and on the ventilator, but her heart
rate on the heart monitor looks strong and steady. Her IV bag is a
different color than when we last saw it.

- Kevin puts his hands on the chair at Mrs. McCulloch's bed and asks
her, "Do you mind if I borrow this?" We cut away as he’s
waiting expectantly for a reply that won't come anytime soon.
Epilogue
- Interior shot of a darkened room.
- A door opens and three figures step through into the room.
- A fourth figure stops in the doorway and says to someone outside the
room, in a very Latino accent, "Chill, dog, you ain’t getting’
nothin’ from that muchacha." He laughs and closes the door.
- When he turns toward the camera, we see in the dim light that it’s
Ernesto. In an erudite, non-Latino voice, he says, "I can hardly wait
for this charade to end!"
- He then says something in Latin and about a half-dozen candles around
the room spring into flame.
- The other three figures are Youths
2, 3, and
4 from Episode
1.02. We’re inside the room that was featured in this Episode's Teaser.
- Ernesto picks up one of the rubber gloves from the table and examines it
absent-mindedly. He tosses it back onto the table.
- Ernesto crosses the room and leans against the far wall. He puts his
head back against the wall. Close-up on Ernesto's face. He looks tired.
Within frame, but unnoticed by Ernesto, is the ID photo of Desi Stark
that's stuck to the graffiti-covered wall. It's immediately to the left of
Ernesto's face. Ernesto speaks to the Youths:
- "Alright, let's review what information we have. We don’t know
who the girl and the spiky-hared boy are, yet they know everything we're
doing. They’re not Carmines, but wherever they are, the Carmines are
nearby. We don’t see them around, but every time I turn around, they’re
right there!
I don’t want that to happen again!" (beat) "So what
are you going to do?"
- The Youths glance at each other, then stare back at Ernesto. One of
them finally says, "Whatever you want us to?"
- Ernesto says, "Good answer, but let's get more specific. Find out
who they are! Start with mundane means. We first saw them in the alley
where we performed the last successful sacrifice. Maybe they're from
around there. Start asking
around in that neighborhood. Somebody might know something. If that
fails, if you can find something that definitively belongs to either of
them, I can use that to power a locator spell. A personal possession, a
drop of blood, a picture -- anything like that will do."
- The Youths nod, but say nothing. Ernesto asks, "Any
questions?" The Youths shake their heads. After a beat, Ernesto
says, "Then I have one for you." With a hint of an edge in his
voice, Ernesto says, "Why are you still here?"
- It takes the Youths a second to process this. Then as one, they shout
things like "Right!" "Gotcha!" "Just
leaving!" and they jump up and exit the room.
- Cut back to a close-up of Ernesto. He doesn't move as we hear the Youths
leave. He's just glaring at the door. The photo of Desi is still visible
on the wall next to his head. Hold for a second. Cut to black. Roll end
credits.
