If you've ever seen the movie The Elephant Man, this is the same reaction (and camera work) that we see from Dr. Treves when he first sees the Elephant Man.
If you haven't seen the movie, I heartily recommend you rent it and watch it. Parts of it are very disturbing, but the whole thing is deeply moving.
