I'm including this conversation because of the drama it contains... and the drama it foreshadows.

Desi: You know we're all in high school, right? That's come up because we were all at the memorial service [for Miranda].
Kevin: Yes. Yes, I did know that. It's easy to forget, because you and Jewel handle yourselves very well.
Desi: Well, you know, sometimes they have these dances. And there's one next weekend. And if you go with a student, regular people from the community can attend.
Kevin: That's certainly a nice way to... increase attendance.
Desi: Right. So like if someone outside the school asks someone in the school, they can go to, like to the prom, which is next week.
Kevin: Oh, your prom is next week?
Desi: Yes, our prom is next week.
Kevin: Ah. Big prom week next week. I'm usually aware of that sort of thing, because there's sometimes an incidence of -- well, never mind. That's all work-related stuff. Go 'head.
Desi: I'm just making conversation, that's all.
Kevin: (after a beat) Can we back up a little bit? Because I think I just missed something here.
(Desi stammers.)
Kevin: Your prom is next week? Oh, OK, great! Who are you going with?
Desi: I haven't found anyone yet. I've been really busy. Ever since the memorial service... and with my martial arts training...
Kevin: You do martial arts? Wow! Cool. How long have you been doing martial arts?
Desi: Private lessons, about three months. JD has been training with me.
Kevin: Who?
Desi: JD. (a beat) Jewel. We call her JD at school.
Kevin: Oh. Interesting nickname. She's been training with you, too? (suddenly wistful) She has a good head on her shoulders.
Desi: (realizing by Kevin's reaction to the mention of JD's name that this conversation isn't going where she wanted) Yeah.
Kevin: She's very... that whole thing at the church, that was very impressive. The way she stayed calm with the whole, you know, the woman being stabbed and blood all over. That freaks some people out. That was good. Not for the lady who was stabbed, of course.
Desi: But she's out of the hospital now.
Kevin: Oh! Yeah, I'm really glad... That whole.. that whole... I can't tell you how bad I feel about that whole thing. Because if I had not grabbed you, then the janitor might never have been able to get at her. I don't know how I'm ever going to make that up to her.
Desi: Everyone makes mistakes under pressure.
Kevin: Not usually that get people gored. That's pretty serious. (a beat) You said next week is your prom?
Desi: (suddenly optimistic) Yeah!
Kevin: Do you know if JD is taking anybody?
(Desi, shattered, opens her mouth to reply when an off-camera scream cuts the air.)
