Part II
Episode: 1.08
Air date: August 1, 2003. The episode is
set in early June, the day after Episode
1.07 ends -- the first day of summer vacation
Cast Members: Desi
Stark, Doug, and JD
Previously, on Buffy
- A policeman shoots, without provocation, a youth he
has pulled over for a routine traffic violation.
- Doug discovers The Occult Emporium, a strange little
shop run by a strange little man, Abe
Solomon (played by Tony Shalhoub in the same make-up he used for Jeebs
in Men in Black II). It was from Abe that we learned about the veil
and why the Cast Members could see through it. A subsequent meeting with
Priscilla seemed to confirm Abe's theories.
- Doug witnessed a mob attack on two Carmines. When
the police showed up, the violence escalated to a new level. One gang member
was killed and another wounded.
- Desi applies for a job at Aegis Security. James
Schuler checks out the homeless folks who attacked the Allen High prom. JD
finds a tattoo parlor she hadn't seen before. And at the parlor, she learns
of a policeman who was shot and killed during a routine traffic violation.
- JD convinces Kevin to keep trying to get back on
Desi's good side.
- The Cast Members interrupt yet another Lobo ritual,
shattering the veil and also killing Squid Face in the process.
- James Schuler has a conversation with Ernesto while
he's removing a body from the trunk of his car.
Teaser
Since this is the second part of a two-part adventure, there is no Teaser.
Act 1: School's Out for Summer
- JD goes down to the county courthouse to look up real estate records.
- After long waits in many lines and muted (and fruitless) conversations
with many people behind little glass dividers, she gets access to the
records.
- She reads over the records at the public library.
- The house that the Lobos live in is owned by "Albert Snyder, dec."
- The house that the Carmines live in is owned by a corporation that is
ultimately owned by Mark Mendelson.
- JD doesn't recognize either name. She does some research at the
library and gets an address for both. Synder has an Allentown address;
Mendelson is in Philadelphia.
- JD decides that it may take a computer search to find out more
information about the owners. She befriends a homeless person with a
shopping cart, gets a ride for her books in the shopping cart, and goes
off in search of Doug.
- Cut to Desi at Tiger Schulmann Karate
- Desi is pummeling a heavy punching bag. The bag is between Desi and
the camera. Desi's blows on the bag become increasingly ferocious. Cut
briefly to a close-up of Michael
Chen as he watches Desi. One of his eyebrows is slowly rising.
- The camera circles around the punching bag to a point over Desi's
shoulder. We now see that mounted on the punching bag is a little black
bowtie.
- When Desi finally takes a break, Michael asks her if everything's OK.
Desi says everything's fine, and mentions that she used Michael as a
reference for a job.
Michael also mentions that he's received no additional payments from
Philip Glass. Desi says since she'll be getting a job, she'll take over
those payments. 00:27:19
- Michael says that if Desi needs to change her training schedule for
work, he'll be happy to accommodate. He's never had a student who
demonstrated as much natural talent at martial arts as Desi. Desi asks,
"Can we do some live sparring, then?" Michael inhales
nervously to reply, but before he can speak, we cut to Doug.
- Doug is at the Occult Emporium
- Abe Solomon is behind the counter, his back to the store, when Doug
enters the shop. Abe turns, sees Doug, and immediately reaches for the
drawstring and closes the blinds. The room is plunged into murk. From
far off in the room, we hear someone shout, "Hey!" Doug
replies, "Cope with it!"
- Doug gets the book he ordered -- Sorcery for Dummies -- and
takes possession of it. Abe proclaims in a loud voice that he doesn't
carry Introduction to Necromancy, the other book that Doug
ordered. Clearly this performance is for the benefit of the other
patron(s) in the shop. As long as he's shopping, Doug also buys some
candles.
- Doug takes his book and his purchases to the warehouse where his band
practices. He finds that JD is already there, talking with Hacksaw,
the band's bass guitarist. JD comments on Doug's Sorcery for Dummies.
He responds that he thinks he's found a new calling. That's when Doug
notices the large, old-looking books that JD is carrying.
Rehearsal begins in earnest.
- Cut to a female police officer
- She's roughly holding a 12-year-old kid. His bike is lying nearby. The
officer is lecturing the kid on the sanctity of private property, so we
get the impression that he's been trespassing.
- The cop is conducting herself professionally as she speaks to the kid.
"Who's going to pay for that broken window?" The camera cuts
briefly to the shattered window of a house.
- The kid gives the cop some lip. The cop takes it OK as she starts to
write the kid up. The kid quietly mutters something about "Stupid
cops." Cut to a close-up of the officer, who looks up briefly over
her pad. For an instant, the irises of her eyes glow. She turns and
looks at the kid.
- The kid realizes that she's looking at him. He avoids her eye contact
by looking down. Cut to a medium shot of the cop as she says,
"Thought you'd get away with it this time, didn't you, Poncela?"
Cut to a scene elsewhere in the neighborhood, where people are sitting
out on their porches or standing in groups on the sidewalk, talking.
Suddenly, the sound of a gunshot rings out. Several pigeons noisily take
flight. The residents all look in the same direction (presumably the
direction of the gunfire) for just a moment. Then they go back to what
they were doing -- the kinds of things that good neighbors should do. 00:42:31
- Cut to an interior shot of the closed door of a well-appointed office.
- There's a knock at the door. A familiar voice from off-camera bids the
knocker enter. Desi enters the room for her job interview with James
Schuler, CEO of Aegis Security Corporation.
00:51:50
- JD and Doug are in the warehouse after rehearsal
- The rest of the band have gone off to get something to eat.
- Doug pulls out an expensive-looking laptop computer and starts it up.
They begin by looking up Albert Snyder.
- The building in which the Lobos are squatting is owned by the
estate of Albert Snyder. Snyder's will is being contested by his
heirs and by a former business associate, Allen Roebuck. Although
the ownership of this specific building is not mentioned in the
suit, none of the estate has been disbursed while the will is tied
up in probate. Further research shows that there's about $60,000 in
back taxes owned on the building. This debt will have to be assumed
by whoever acquires the building, which is yet another reason why no
one is rushing to do anything with the structure.
- Albert Snyder died 10 years ago. He was co-owner of a hardware
store on a property about five blocks from the Lobo home, in what
was once a nice neighborhood but no longer is. The hardware store
closed last year. The property is still owned by Roebuck and the
Snyder estate.
- They then look up Mark Mendelson.
- Woo-ey, is this guy bad news! According to an article last year in
the Morning Call, he currently owns or has owned at least six
blighted or failed properties in Allentown. He's stiffed businesses
for amounts ranging from a few thousand dollars to more than a
million dollars, and he owes close to $200,000 to the city in unpaid
taxes, fines and water and sewer bills.
- To make matters worse, he uses his blighted properties as
collateral to secure loans worth millions of dollars -- far more
than the collateral properties are worth.
- City Hall has tried to get money out of him for years, with no
luck. Allentown officials and Mendelson now regard each other with
contempt.
- Doug asks JD if she wants to see a cool site about summoning demons.
"It's got great clip art!"
- From there, they start looking for arcane symbols that could be
used for summoning, which makes JD think about what she discovered
at the tattoo parlor.
- JD has Doug call up the newspaper article about officer Mark
Glaser's shooting.
It says in the article that the shooter was a man named Carlos
Poncela. Poncela was captured shortly after the shooting. It was
later discovered that he was wanted for several armed robberies at
the time he was pulled over.
- JD realizes that "Poncela" is the name by which the cop
addressed Spyder when they tried to shoot him and Wrestler. Doug
hypothesizes that Poncela might be a common name, but a quick check
leads them to conclude that it's quite rare in the US.
- They then search on "police shootings." They find a
reference to the recent shooting of two gang members (these were
Spyder and Wrestler). With some hacking into the Morning Call's
system, they discover that an article is being prepared about
Officer Jennifer Fenstermaker having shot and killed a 12-year-old
boy. Neighbors corroborated her story that the kid drew a weapon
(although the nature of the weapon is not specified, nor is there a
statement that the weapon was recovered).
- Additional hacking reveals that Mark Glaser's partners were Donald
Olson, Stanley Mirkin, Richard Potts, and Jennifer Fenstermaker.
They find that Officers Olson and Mirkin were the ones who were on
the scene at the mob incident in which Spyder and Wrestler were
shot.
- Doug and JD are convinced that this isn't a coincidence, but they
don't know what to do about it? Who do you tell when the cops go
bad? They even decide not to tell Desi, because they don't want her
to beat up on cops.
- JD asks if all the shooting victims have been Hispanic? She then
notices that most of the victims were Hispanic. In instances
where the victim was not Hispanic, there was some minor provocation
of the police.
- Perhaps they'll need an exorcism? Off to see
Father
Sullivan!
Act 2: Deceptions
- Back to Desi 01:12:50
- She enters the house wearing a hat that looks somewhat like a Burger
King hat, in the same colors as a Burger King hat. She's counting on her
father not looking at it closely enough to realize it's not a
Burger King hat.
- Mr. Stark asks Desi how her first day of work went. She says that she
spoke with her manager, and they're kind of short-handed and can't be
flexible about hours; they won't be able to give her time off to go to
Steam Town this year.
Mr. Stark looks wistfully at the pamphlet for Steam Town on his desk.
"Well, there's something in historic Bethlehem that we could do
this summer. That's much closer; we'll do that instead!
By the way, some mail came for you today."
- Desi has received in the mail a large envelope from Olin Mills, a
local photographer. She opens it to discover the photographs of her and Kevin
at the prom. She stares at the images for a moment -- she and Kevin in
the archway, wreathed in flowers -- then drops them, and the Steam Town
pamphlet, into the trash. That's when she notices the second, much
smaller envelope. She takes the envelope up to her room and slams the
door behind her.
- Desi plops down in bed and looks at the other envelope. It has no
return address. She opens it. It contains a greeting card with a picture
of a single red rose on the outside, and the words, "Thinking of
you." On the inside is the handwritten note, "Just wanted to
let you know. -Kevin"
- Desi crumples up the card and tosses it away. As the camera follows
the trajectory of the card, it pans over the door of her bedroom. Desi
then sees that the frame of the door is splintered from her slamming it.
She inspects the damage with a look of confusion on her face.

- Cut to James Schuler in his office
- A woman knocks on his door, enters, and hands him a manila folder. She
says, "This is high priority." Mr. Schuler says, "Thanks
you, Marcie,"
and accepts the folder. As he reads the contents, there's a look of
disapproval on his face. His phone rings. He answers with a simple
"Yes?"
- Ernesto: About the Slayer...
- Schuler: (surprised, he looks into
the receiver for a moment) I have a plan. (pause) There
is one thing you could do for me. Do you at least have her name?
- Ernesto: (reluctantly) No.
- Schuler: You're not exactly making
this easy for me, are you? Once you get it, I know what I'll be
doing. Call me as soon as you find out. (He hangs up and goes
back to reading the folder.)
- Cut to Ernesto in the basement of the Lobo house. He hangs up his cell
phone and turns, almost colliding with Priscilla.
- Ernesto: How do you do that? I didn't
even hear you walk up.
- Priscilla: You weren't supposed to.
Problems?
- Ernesto: No, everything's under
control.
- Priscilla: Are you happy with the way
things turned out last night?
- Ernesto: What? With Diego's death?
- Priscilla: No, not that part. You got
what you wanted.
- Ernesto: Yeah, I guess I did. (He
walks away. Priscilla looks after him and smiles.)
- JD and Doug attend Mass at St. Catherine of Siena
- Afterward, they meet with Father Sullivan. They ask him about
"unsettled spirits" and possession. He explains that
possession by deceased persons, rather than by demons, usually requires
a link of some kind to the deceased person. Items that the decedent
owned and treasured can create enough of a link for an restless spirit
to possess the current owner of the item.
- The only remedy is to exorcise the spirit while it possesses a vessel.
This is never easy, as the possessing spirit attempts to resist the
exorcism, and usually use the vessel to cause as much disruption as
possible. It's often a challenge to restrain the vessel while not
breaking secular law.
- JD and Doug debate telling Desi about the possessed policemen. How can
they possibly restrain four cops by themselves?
The finally decide to tell Desi. They hop into Doug's father's car to
head to Desi's place.
- Cut to Allentown police headquarters
- It's a beehive of activity there. Cops are moving about as
rough-looking youths are being in-processed. The camera pans across the
youths, down a hall, and stops on an officer holding a small stack of
forms. The officer is speaking to someone off-camera. "This is the
paperwork you'll need. As you know, we're beefing up security because of
the publicity of the case involved. These are the terms of your contract
and the release forms you'll need." He hands the papers to Kevin
Troxell. "Our CEO will sign these and get them back to you as soon
as possible," says Kevin.
- Doug and JD are driving to Desi's place
- They're about four blocks from Desi's place when Doug notices flashing
lights in his rear-view mirror. After a brief internal debate, he
nervously pulls over.
- The police car pulls behind Doug's car. There are two officers in the
car. One of them is talking on the radio. Seconds pass by and neither
cop gets out of the car. After what seems like 10 minutes, both doors on
the cruiser open and both officers step out.
- A female officer approaches the passenger side (JD's side) of the
cars, while a male officer approaches the driver's side. The female
officer stops well back from the door of Doug's car. The male officer
walks up to Doug's open window.
- The officer politely asks Doug for his driver's license and
registration. Very slowly, Doug removes his wallet, takes the requested
cards from it, and hands them to the officer. As the officer reaches for
the cards, Doug sees a small part of a tattoo emerge from under the
officer's short sleeve. The part that Doug sees appears to be part of a
bird.
- The officer takes the cards from Doug and takes them back to the
cruiser. The female officer remains where she was, outside and behind
Doug's car.
- The male officer returns. Doug sees the cop's name tag says "Mirkin."
A tense conversation ensues -- which becomes only more tense when the
Cast Members realize they've been pulled over by two of Mark Glaser's
former partners.
Fortunately, and to everyone's surprise, they survive the encounter.
01:44:45
- Cut to Desi's front door as the doorbell rings.
- Desi is upstairs in her room, ironing. As the doorbell rings a second
time, Desi lifts the towel that's draped over the article she's ironing.
She then lifts the article itself -- the greeting card that Kevin sent
her. She's trying to get the wrinkles out. Desi blows on the card a few
times to cool it, then sets it aside and goes down to answer the door.
She finds Doug and JD standing there. They look a little pale.
- Desi invites them in and offers them lemonade. As she gets the
lemonade, JD notices the prom pictures in the trash. When Desi returns,
JD doesn't mention the pictures. Instead, she tells Desi about the
"unsettled spirit" and the possessions. Doug and JD manage to
convey this need without revealing that the possessed people are police
officers.
- The group laments that this is a ghostly possession rather than a
demonic possession -- which Doug thinks sounds like a lot more fun.
Well, maybe next time.
- They debate setting a trap for the possessees, or capturing them in a
net (Desi's father is a naval historian), or just wearing ski masks.
They don't really come up with a satisfying plan, though.
- Still, we cut to a montage of Desi digging out her ski mask, JD trying
to untangle a fishing net, and Doug looking up the addresses of the
possessees online. At one point, JD's attempt to gather up the net is
hampered by the discovery that there's an anchor lying on it. Desi lifts
the anchor effortlessly -- much to her surprise. She says to herself,
"Gee, I remember when I was a kid I couldn't budge this
thing...." She hands it to Doug, and it almost rips his arm out.
Then she goes back to choosing between the pink Tommy Hilfiger ski mask
and the yellow Christian Dior ski mask.
01:59:05
- The next morning, Desi reports to Aegis to be fitted for her uniform
- The parking lot is filled. It looks like everyone is here
today.
- Desi enters the building and finds it aswarm with Aegis officers in
uniform. Their movement is too regimented to be called
"milling." Roll is being called as Aegis officers respond with
cries of "Here!"
- Cut shot to the interior of Allentown police headquarters.
- They're going through their morning briefing:
- The sergeant calls out, "0800 to 1000, we'll only have three
patrol cars in the field. Everyone else will be in here on the
special assignment." The sergeant calls off roll and issues
assignments. Among these: "Mirkin, Fenstermaker: Special
assignment. Olson: Field patrol. Potts: Field patrol --"
- Suddenly the sergeant is interrupted by another officer who bursts
into the briefing room. "Sarge!" he exclaims,
"There's been a leak!"
- Cut back to the interior of Aegis Security. All of the officers are
forming into ranks within the conference room.
- Kevin has finished calling off the roll. Kevin is all business and
Take-Charge Guy, as we've seen before when order needs to be maintained.
He addresses the troops: "We're not going to be the only security
outfit out there. I want you to be aware of others. Not every company
may follow the same procedures. Stick with your buddies as they've been
assigned. And be ready for just about anything. Move out!"
- As Kevin watches the officers file out the door, he sees Desi.
"You're not taking part in this. I just want you to understand
that. You're far too new." Desi replies that she doesn't even have
her uniform yet. She asks what's going on. Before Kevin can answer, we
cut to:
- JD and Doug, scoping out Officer Fenstermaker's apartment.
- They're surreptitiously leaning against a newspaper dispenser across
the street, intending to surprise and capture Officer Fenstermaker when
she leaves her apartment. They're concerned because Desi is late.
- As they wait, a man comes up to the newspaper dispenser, excuses
himself for making the Cast Members move, and buys a paper. He takes
about three steps from the Cast Members and then just freezes in his
tracks, all his attention on the paper.
- Doug sees this and peeks into the dispenser at the headlines. On the
front page: "Poncela granted change of venue. Leaves for Pittsburgh
this morning."
In smaller print, "Tight security surrounding his move from
jail."
- Cut to an exterior scene
- Officer Potts is escorting a Latino youth down the street. We can see
from here that the youth's hands are tie-wrapped behind his back.
The youth is looking down, but he's offering no resistance to the
officer.
- Potts yells, Come along! The he freezes for a moment. As Potts looks
directly into the camera, his irises glow momentarily.
- Because the police officer has stopped, the Latino youth looks up. We
now see clearly that it's Ghost.
- Cut to commercial break. 02:05:21
Act 3: Vengeance
- Officer Potts looks over at his cruiser a few yards away. It was to this
car that he was dragging Ghost, but then he stopped.
- Ghost, wondering what's going to happen next, looks at Officer Potts.
- Potts looks directly at Ghost. Neither man speaks.
- After a few seconds, Potts says quietly, but firmly, "Get
out of here." He releases his grip on Ghost. As Ghost stands there
stunned, Potts turns and walks to his cruiser.
- Back in police headquarters
- There's activity throughout the headquarters as policemen assemble
into some sort of order.
- The camera moves through various rooms. There's no sign of Officers
Fenstermaker and Mirkin.
- Finally, the camera moves past a door labeled "Armory."
Inside, Fenstermaker and Mirkin are using a crowbar to pry the door of a
heavy metal cabinet. Obviously, they don't have authorization to open
this cabinet. After a few seconds, the door pops open.
- Inside are very large automatic weapons. Mirkin starts taking
out the weapons as Fenstermaker begins scooping out cartons of
ammunition.
- Cut to a police cruiser that's stopped at a stop sign.
- The cruiser isn't moving. Officer Olson (whom our audience recognizes
from the Teaser of Episode
1.07) and an unnamed partner are listening to the dispatcher on the
radio. Olson holds the handset of the radio.
- The dispatcher's voice says, "Suspect is moving rapidly down
Seventh Street, passing Turner. Passing Linden."
- The partner leans forward in his seat and looks down the cross-street.
The partner says, "Here he comes!" A second later, a car zooms
past the front of the cruiser.
- Olson is just about to push the Talk button on the handset when his
eyes flash. After a moment, he says into the radio, "We've lost
him." The partner stares at Olson in disbelief.
- Cut to a shot of the cruiser moving rapidly around a corner. The
passenger-side door opens and out tumbles the partner. He comes to rest
on the sidewalk, then moves. He's banged up and badly bruised, but as
far as we can tell, he's not dying. As the partner lifts himself up, the
cruiser's lights and siren go on as it races down the street.
- Cut back to Kevin and Desi at Aegis
- We're coming in just after an exposition, because Kevin says to Desi,
"So that's the situation. They're anticipating crowds. probably
ugly." Desi wishes Kevin good luck.
- As he's about to leave, she thanks him for the card. He pauses.
"You got it?" He smiles slightly -- something Desi has never
seen before when Kevin is in commander mode. He turns to his officers.
"Come on, guys!" They move out like a well-oiled machine.
- JD and Doug conclude that it's pointless to wait for Jennifer Fenstermaker
outside her apartment. Their target is going to be Poncela while he's being
moved; the cops are probably already on their way. They need to call Desi.
- Marcie asks Desi if they can postpone the measurement-taking for the
uniform, in light of all the activity.
- Desi's cell phone rings. It's JD. They'll swing by to pick her up.
- Since most of the cops should be at the prison, Doug feels no reason
to mid the speed limit.
- Two blocks from the prison, traffic is impassible because the streets
are packed with people from here to the prison. They get out and walk.
On the way, JD explains that the man who killed the now-restless spirit
is going to be transported out of the county prison this morning. This
is when they expect the possessees to strike.
- Desi asks where the four people are who she has to restrain. They're
nowhere to be seen.
- Suddenly a voice next to JD whispers, "Psst! Got a knife?"
It's Ghost. He's asking JD to cut the tie-wraps that bind his wrists. He
explains what happened to him as JD cuts his bonds. He tells JD to be
careful; it's a madhouse out here. Then he disappears into the crowd.
- Desi says that they won't be able to spot the possessees in this
crowd. She explains how she believes the police will be able to protect
Poncela. JD and Doug finally come clean.
JD explains her reasoning for believing that Mark Glaser's four partners
are possessed: Spyder's account that the cop looked at him and said,
"Thought you'd get away with it this time, Poncela?" 02:16:00
- Outside the prison, the media are assembled
- A crowd is gathered outside the sawhorse barricades that the police
have set up. There are cops among the crowd as well.
- Cut to Officer Glaser's former partners. The four of them (Olson,
Mirkin, Fenstermaker, and Potts) are walking down a hallway somewhere,
but we can't identify the building they're in. They're carrying the
large weapons we saw them remove from the police armory. Somewhat
surprisingly, they're wearing their normal uniforms and not body armor.
- They seem to be in a maintenance corridor. They come to an exit door,
push the crash bars, and head out.
- Cut back to the Cast Members
- Ahead in the crowd, Doug notices a woman is
being escorted by a county sheriff toward the prison. She has a rather
large child in her arms (four years old, perhaps?). She turns and Doug
recognizes her face from the articles about the shooting. It's Janice
Glaser, Mark's widow. When Doug points this out to JD, JD urges them to
move toward her.
- Three bailiffs emerge from the courthouse near
the Cast Members and begin making their way toward the prison. The crowd
parts for them. The Cast Members follow behind in their wake.
Along the way, the Cast Members hear the bailiffs talk on the radio.
They're headed toward Glaser's widow, to escort her to the prison. She's
asked to be allowed to see her husband's alleged killer climb into the
police wagon as an act of closure. Although it's not really closure,
because he's still on his way to trial. 02:22:23
- JD calls Father Sullivan to ask him to come down to the prison. At
this point, they're still not really sure what to do or where the Father
needs to be. It turns out that Father Sullivan is out. The younger
priest who answered the phone offers to get a message to Father
Sullivan.
- Cut to a man in a prison jumpsuit and chains being led down a
corridor by two guards. Behind them is an elderly priest,
reading from the Bible. A new guard comes down the hall and catches
up with the procession. He whispers something into the priest's ear.
The priest stops advancing as he considers, with a serious look on
his face, what he should do. Eventually, the guards notice the
priest has stopped, and they stop too. Everyone looks at the priest.
After a moment, the priest whispers into the ear of guard who
approached him. Cut to the next shot.
- Exterior shot of the door of the prison. As the doors open, the crowd
begins to jeer and boo. Then they notice that it's a priest who has come
through the door, and he's alone. The crowd quiets down as Father
Sullivan begins looking over the crowd. He begins heading for the
courthouse, which is where JD's message told him to go.
- Janice Glaser is by the edge of the police barricade, with her escort
of bailiffs. She's not far from the door that Poncela will be stepping
through in a few minutes.
- Desi looks around at the roofs of nearby buildings. Suddenly, she sees
the barrel of a gun. And another barrel, on the same roof. Desi points
this out to JD and Doug, then heads for that building. She grabs Father
Sullivan along the way and practically drags him with her, going as fast
as the priest can bear.
At that point, the doors of the prison open. The crowd erupts as the
first city official steps out.
- Doug is trying to figure out what to do when he looks closely at
Janice Glaser and her child. His look of grim determination begins to
melt, and is eventually replaced with one of confusion. He says to JD,
"You know, if the spirits are restless because they want vengeance
on the guy that murdered the cop, how badly do we really want to save
this guy?"
- Cut to the roof of a building. The stairwell door bursts open to
reveal Desi in a kicking stance. Behind her in the dimness, Father
Sullivan straightens his glasses and starts paging through a book. All
four cops are here. Two cops are lying on their stomachs, poised to
fire on the door of the prison below. The other two are standing. At the sound of Desi's arrival, they
all turn and look at her. Each cop is holding an assault rifle. Desi
lunges for the cops who are standing while Father Sullivan begins
speaking loudly in Latin. The cops on their stomachs turn their
attention back to the prison door. 02:36:27
- Down on the street, Doug has concluded that it's bad enough that
Glaser's son has to live with the fact that his father was murdered. He
doesn't want the child to also live with having to watch another man
gunned down before him, even if that man is Poncela. Doug points up to
the roof and shouts, "Look out!" Unfortunately, his shout
coincides with the last city official appearing at the prison door:
Chief of Police Stephen Kuhn. The crowd immediately begins to jeer and
boo at the unpopular chief.
Because of this, only the people standing near Doug look up toward the
roof. JD, meanwhile, is making her way toward the prison door.
- Back on the roof, Desi strikes out at the nearest cop in an attempt to
disarm him. She does so successfully, and his rifle sails over the edge
of the roof into an alley. The second policeman switches his assault
rifle to burst fire and opens fire on Desi. Desi leaps clear of the
trajectory of the bullets, almost Matrix-like, and comes down hard on
the barrel of the rifle that's shooting at her. The cop stares in
disbelief when he sees that the barrel of his weapon is bent. Father
Sullivan is still chanting.
- On the street, some of the cops are looking around nervously, as if
the may have heard the gunfire over the roar of the crowd. The bailiffs
standing near Glaser's widow protectively move closer to her. JD reaches
the police line that marks the closest point that any member of the
public can come to the prison.
Doug is trying to get more people to look up at the scene on the nearby
rooftop. He takes a trash bag out of a nearby trash can, inflates it by
blowing into it, and prepares to pop it.
- On the roof, Desi is about to head for the two cops who are lying on
their stomachs so that she can disarm them. The cop that she disarmed a
moment ago has no intention of letting her do this; he's going to use
jujitsu to throw Desi off the roof of the building. Desi responds with
martial arts of her own and knocks the cop out cold. When he falls onto
the pavement, Father Sullivan makes the sign of the cross, and the cop's
body spasms. His back arches and his eyes open wide. That's when we
notice his irises glow momentarily. As Desi watches the body of the cop
collapse, we see that the other standing policeman his pulled his
sidearm and is aiming it at Desi. She turns just in time to see it and
--
- -- on the street, Doug pops the trash bag, hoping that it will sound
like a gun shot and everyone will take cover. But at the same time,
Poncela is escorted out of the prison, and the crowd goes wild,
screaming insults and curses. The pop is lost in this din. However --
- -- Cut back to Desi standing on the roof. She looks down at her blouse
to see the red stain blossoming there. She's been shot! She dives at the
cop who shot her with his sidearm and knocks him out with an elbow to
the chin. As she turns to the cops who are on their stomachs, we cut to
a close-up of a finger on a trigger, squeezing, squeezing...
- JD weaves through the police line. She runs up to Poncela with two
officers on her heals. "If you step out here, they're going to kill
you!" she shouts to Poncela -- just as the sound of a gunshot
reverberates through the air. JD crumples to the ground as pandemonium
breaks loose. In the chaos, Doug heads toward the fallen JD.
- On the roof, Desi reaches the cops who are lying on their stomachs and
relieves both of them of their rifles, kung-fu style. In the ensuing tussle,
she manages to knock one of the cops unconscious. That only leaves one
left, and that one doesn't have her rifle anymore. She does, however,
still have her sidearm.
- On the street, people are running everywhere. Some cops have dragged
Poncela back to the prison door, while others are trying to get Glaser's
widow to safety. Unfortunately, most of the people don't know where the
gunfire came from, so they're running madly about. Even some of the
police are uncertain where the shooter is, and they're adding to the
confusion by shouting contradictory orders into the crowd. JD lies in a
growing pool of her own blood. As Doug gets closer to JD, he sees a
uniformed policeman pick JD up and begin to move her toward the nearest
point of cover: the prison door. No, wait -- that's not a cop who has
JD. It's a private security guard. It's Kevin! He's speaking comforting
words as he gets JD closer to the prison door. But before they get
there, another shot rings out, from what sounds like a smaller weapon.
Kevin is hit. He goes down. Doug gets to them and drags both Kevin and
JD into the safety of the prison.
- On the roof, Desi goes all martial-arts on the last cop and knocks her
out. As the cop falls at Desi's feet, her body spasms and her irises
glow momentarily. That's the last of the possessed policepersons.
Father Sullivan, sensing that all the exorcisms have been successful,
stops chanting. When Desi asks him if everything has been set aright, he
replies, "It's done." Desi limps toward the stairway as the
old priest attempts to help support her.
- Cut to a shot of the interior of a hospital room
- JD is back in he regular bed. Doug and Desi are there, talking with
her. Desi's arm is in a sling, although she observes that the gunshot
wound doesn't hurt nearly as much as she expected it to.
In the next bed, the still-comatose Mrs.
McCulloch lies peacefully, while her son Walter continues his vigil
at her side. JD's and Mrs. McCulloch's heart monitors beep almost in
unison.
- The conversation turns to Kevin. They've heard nothing about his
condition. Doug observes that Kevin was still alive when they brought
him to the hospital. JD and Desi want to know how he is, so Doug leaves
the room to find out.
- Desi is sitting between the two patients' beds. She leans back in her
chair to relax. After a moment, she becomes aware of a light pressure on
her forearm. When she looks down, she sees Mrs. McCulloch's hand on her
forearm. Mrs. McCulloch's eyes are open! Desi cries out in joy. Mrs.
McCulloch can't speak because of the ventilator tube in her mouth, but
there's a trace of a smile around her eyes. Walter runs out of the room
to find a doctor.
- Desi takes Mrs. McCulloch's hand. "You're going to be
alright," Desi says. The old lady squeezes very weakly, very
gently. As Desi looks about the room, she sees a book on Mrs.
McCulloch's nightstand. It's the same book that Desi was supposed to
read to Mrs. McCulloch on the night before she fell into her coma. Mrs.
McCulloch glances around the room to get her bearings. Her eyes fall on
the book as well. Desi picks up the book and shows it to Mrs. McCulloch.
The old lady recognizes it and her smile grows.
- Desi continues holding Mrs. McCulloch's hand when she becomes aware of
a strange sound. JD fearfully looks up at her own heart monitor to make
sure that the steady tone isn't coming from that device. It isn't. It's
coming from Mrs. McCulloch's monitor. The trace on the monitor is a flat
line. Desi shouts, "No, it's going to be alright!" Mrs.
McCulloch's grip on Desi's hand has already loosened and her eyes slowly
close, but the trace of a smile is still visible on her face.
- Outside the hospital room, Kevin approaches the doorway. He too has
one of his arms in a sling. He raises his hand to knock on the door
frame, then comprehends what's happening inside the room. He stops, then
looks around. He hears doctors running toward him and steps away from
the door frame to give them room. As the doctors and nurses enter, the
Cast Members look toward them. They don't see Kevin, who has moved
beyond the doorway.
- The camera stays on Kevin as we hear the activity occurring inside the
room. After a moment, Kevin looks down at the floor. He walks slowly
down the hall and enters the elevator. As the elevator doors close, Doug
crosses the frame to return to JD's hospital room. He and Kevin don't
see each other. The camera stays on the closed elevator doors for one
second, two seconds. Cut to black. Roll end credits.
