Schuler: Thank God you're alright! I've
been getting... What happened?
Desi: They think he might pull through?
Schuler: It's still very early to tell. He's
strong boy. He won't go without a fight, that's for sure.
The woman overhears this and begins crying again. Mr. Schuler takes Desi outside the room.
Schuler: Can you tell me anything that
happened?
Desi: We were attacked.
Schuler: By who? Do you know? Did you get a
good look?
Desi: It was more of a thing than a
person.
Schuler: What do you mean, more of a thing?
Desi: It would probably be better if you
thought of it as an animal attack. It was just doing what comes with its nature.
But something brought it here; something let it loose on the city.
Schuler: You mean it was a trained animal?
Desi: Kinda trained.
Schuler: I'll... I'll talk to someone in the
police department and city hall. We'll see what we can do.
Desi: They won't be able to stop it. It's
not the kind of thing they're equipped for. (beat) I'm going to have to
be taking a leave of absence. Is that alright?
Schuler: I understand. It's not a problem.
They tell me you were right there when it happened.
Desi: I tried to stop it, but... you know
Kevin, always... right there in the thick of things. He was trying to keep it
from focusing on me.
Schuler: Yeah, I know Kevin. I'm sorry that
things worked out the way they did. Desi, no matter what happens, I want you to
understand that it's not your fault.
Desi: I know that. It's the fault of whoever
brought that thing to this city. (she turns and walks off.)
Mr. Schuler returns to Kevin's bedside and takes Kevin's hand. Kevin's mother excuses herself and goes into the washroom.
Schuler: Kevin, I am so very, very sorry. There are so many things I can do. And despite the power that I have, there's nothing I can do to help you. (puts his hand on Kevin's forehead.) But Desi's right. When we find out who's behind this, that's something I can do something about.
