This is my Web site, obviously.

The name of the site might lead you to believe it's about urban legends, or confidence schemes, or tales told by fishermen about the one that got away. It's about none of those things, although strangely, I've told stories that feature each of those elements.

This Web site is about anything that interests me. The two things I love most are games and entertaining stories. It therefore stands to reason that dearest of all to my heart is a game that tells an entertaining story.  That's a pretty good starting point for the definition of a role-playing game: a game that helps people tell a story. So it shouldn't surprise you to learn that I enjoy role-playing games. That topic gets the lion's share of the Web pages here.

I especially enjoy designing role-playing scenarios and running them. I create the skeleton of a story, and then I ask six or so people to play the roles of some of the characters and, in so doing, help me discover how the story ends.

Some of these people are friends. They've come to expect this sort of thing from me. Others are strangers whom I meet at gaming conventions. I'm flattered that many of them come back for more stories. These folks don't usually stay strangers for long, even if I do have to be reminded of their names because I only see them once or twice a year.

Many role-playing games tell stories that are set in fantasy worlds. As for me, I like to design stories that are more down-to-earth. Stories about people in the modern world. Sometimes these characters are a little over the top. Usually, though, they're Just Plain Folks whose lives suddenly take a sharp left turn into the surreal. That means the stories that I help tell aren't impossible, but they're certainly... unlikely.

And that's how this Web site got its name. Welcome to An Unlikely Story.
