The Dakotas were largely unaffected by the bombs of the Last War. Most of the inhabitants continued to follow the Old Ways of their ancestors, so they didn't have much that was worth bombing. And the few Indians who embraced the trappings of (the white man's) "modern" life -- the so-called Ravenites -- confined their activities to one city that had no military value. However, a significant number of Ravenites and Old Wayer braves were lost in the battle against War, so the Dakotas were not untouched by tragedy. "That Which Adam Lost" begins when three disparate groups of people cross paths in the Dakotas. The first group is a clan of Sioux Indians. They move around through their territory, rarely staying in one location for long. Where game is plentiful, they'll create a temporary settlement. When the game starts to thin out, they pack up and move along in search of better hunting. Eventually they find such a place, settle in for a while, and the cycle begins again. It can take these Sioux years to cover their entire territory. So imagine their surprise when they visit a part of their territory that they haven't been through in quite some time and find a town there. The second party is a group of homesteaders who have settled what they thought to be unclaimed land. They've built a community here. And it looks as if they plan to stay. Then there's the group of rough-looking folks who've just come over the hill. It's hard to imagine a more motley assortment of wasters. What's their story? Were they actually looking for trouble, or was it just luck that they found it? Even in the midst of the wilderness, it can be hard to forget that this is Hell on Earth. |
