Unparalleled sports writer and broadcaster Jackie MacMullan has been covering basketball for three decades, and she will be at An Unlikely Story to discuss her new book, BASKETBALL: A LOVE STORY with Jeff Kinney, followed by a book signing. Practically every notable living NBA player agreed to be interviewed for this book, from Kobe and LeBron to Shaq and Barkley, from Magic and Bird to Bill Russell and Jerry West. The list of coaches is equally impressive, from Phil Jackson and Pat Riley to college greats such as Coach K. More important, the interviews are compelling, candid, and packed with never-before-heard stories. And you can them in person from Jackie herself!
ABOUT THE BOOK:
A sweeping and revelatory history of basketball to tie into a major film series to air on ESPN/ABC, drawing upon hundreds of hours of interviews with the greatest players, coaches, executives, and journalists in the history of the game, including the NBA, WNBA, NCAA and international basketball.
In October 2018, ABC and ESPN will air an epic, prime-time film series about basketball and those who love it. The filmmakers conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with a staggering number of basketball greats. They talked to hundreds of legendary players, such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson. They spoke with renowned coaches, including Phil Jackson and Mike Krzyzewski, as well as numerous executives, commissioners, and journalists. Most impressive was the extraordinary quality of the interviews. Again and again, players spoke candidly about secrets they’d never before discussed on the record.
But when it came time to create the documentary, there was a problem: there was far, far too much great material to fit it all on-screen. It became increasingly clear that to do this story justice would require more than just a documentary—this story cried out for a book. So the filmmakers connected with two of the most well-respected basketball writers working today, Jackie MacMullan and Rafe Bartholomew, and they set to work on what may be the most ambitious basketball book ever written. At once a definitive oral history and something far more literary and intimate, this is the never-before-told story of how basketball came to be, and about what it means to those who’ve given their lives to the game.
